The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has reacted to a viral video clip which captures allegations of malfeasance made by the Honourable Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George, as not entirely accurate and not borne out completely by the facts, thereby creating an erroneous depiction of the events."
At the center of the controversy are claims of malfeasance allegedly being perpetrated at the Akom Axle Load Station, which the NDC MP made on TV3's Current Affairs programme, The Key Points, on Saturday, 14th December 2024.
He accuses the GHA of reportedly firing the female staff member from her position at that station under questionable circumstances.
According to the lawmaker, despite her outstanding performance in increasing revenue, her sacking exposes a deep-rooted web of corruption that threatens the integrity of the country’s revenue collection systems.
But in a statement issued on Monday (16 December), the GHA, while reaffirming its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption or misconduct, emphasized that purpose of the Axle Load Control Programme is not to generate revenue for the State but rather, a control programme to prevent the deterioration of the trunk roads because of overloading and vehicles exceeding the allowable height limits.
The statement further indicated that the said supervisor rather stands accused of falsifying records and deleting transactions to conceal discrepancies in fines collected.
The GHA said, it has therefore launched an audit inquiry into the activities of the station and has taken steps to maintain the integrity of operations, including enhanced supervision and reinforced protocols.
